ELISABETH FRINK 1930 - 1993
Dame Elisabeth Frink was born in Thurlow, Suffolk, England in 1930. As one of Britain’s leading sculptors Frink was awarded several Honorary Doctorates and she also received official recognition, being awarded the C.B.E. in 1969. In 1982 she was created Dame of the British Empire.
She was elected RA in 1977 and in 1985 a retrospective of her work was held at The Royal Academy, London.
Elisabeth Frink worked on many major public commissions, including
Blind Beggar and Dog at Bethnall Green, London,
Noble Horse and Rider at Piccadilly, London,
Shepherd  for Paternoster Square beside St. Paul’s Cathedral, London,
A Walking Madonna for Salisbury Cathedral. Wiltshire.

Men, dogs, horses and birds were constant subject matter throughout her career. She modelled, cast in plaster and then carved the plaster to achieve a tougher surface when the plaster was cast in bronze. She rarely worked with the female form “I have focused on the male because to me he is a subtle combination of sensuality and strength with vulnerability”.
Her figures have dignity mystery and a simplicity of form which place them apart from us.
While fighting cancer Frink struggled to complete her last commission, a monumental but unusual figure of The Risen Christ for the front of the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool, unveiled a week before her death in Woolland, Dorset in 1993.
